White Horse Winter Count

One of our most popular exhibits is Chief White Horse’s Winter Count. This intricate reproduction is truly a beautiful piece of history. It was originally narrated by Chief White Horse to Florence Thwing in 1910. The meticulously recorded narrative is now preserved at the Timber Lake and Area Museum for generations to come. Winter counts are extraordinary records crafted by various tribal nations of the northern plains to chronicle and preserve their histories. Unlike conventional written narratives or oral traditions, winter counts consist of pictorial representations of significant events experienced by community members.
