PLEIN AIR ARTISTS GATHERING
Contact: Kathy Nelson mailto:timtopic@lakotanetwork.com (605-865-3546 or toll free 1-800-664-3546 in SD only)
Greetings, Plein Air Artists! Gathering is FREE and open to public
The June 8-9, 2007 TIMBER LAKE PLEIN AIR GATHERING at Timber Lake is planned and ready. The event is being sponsored by the Timber Lake and Area Historical Society (Kathy Nelson event coordinator) and the South Dakota Plein Air Artists (Jim Pollock, Steve Randall coordinators).
We are excited about this event. In an effort to improve these plein air events for the artists and the public alike we are trying two new things with this event, a MINI ART SHOW and have hopes for a music component:
MINI ART SHOW— On FRIDAY when artists register at the Timber Lake Museum they are welcome to bring framed art from a previous plein air event for display and sale at the Museum Gallery located on Main Street of Timber Lake. The Museum asks for a 10 per cent commission on any sales made at the museum. Artists can pick up and take their art work home after the wet canvas show Saturday. We hope this show and sale of previous work will benefit both the artists and the public and will become a permanent part of these events. The Mini Art Show will be in addi- tion to wet paint show where artists show work done during event.
MUSIC— We are hoping some Timber Lake musicians are going to be at the Saturday night dinner and wet paint show. There is a piano available at the museum. Several plein air artists are also musicians and we are also hoping they will bring their instruments and music abilities and we can have some sort of plein air jam session. So, if you are a musician bring your instrument and we will see what happens.
NORTH DAKOTA ARTISTS INVITED— South Dakota and North Dakota plein air artists are invited to “meet in the middle.” Timber Lake is located midway between Pierre and Bismarck, close to the North Dakota border and the or- ganizers are making an effort to get North Dakota plein air artists to attend this event. This could be an opportunity for artists from South and North Dakota to get together and share some ideas on future events.
Timber Lake will be a great place for artists to paint and network- professionals, amateurs and students alike- all are welcome. The Timber Lake area offers many other opportunities for artists to explore and paint on location.
EVENT CONTACTS— Artists interested in participating should contact Kathy Nelson, Timber Lake and Area Histori- cal Society mailto:timtopic@lakotanetwork.com (605-865-3546 or toll free 1-800-664-3546 in SD only) You can also contact Jim Pollock mailto:jpollock@iw.net or Steve Randall mailto:Srandall@siouxfalls.org and we will forward your intent to participate.

Timber Lake is located on Highway 20 about 40 miles southwest of Mobridge, about midway between Pierre and Bismarck. The West River area presents many scenes and subjects for painting — from river breaks and buttes to historic 1910-era structures and wide prairie vistas. The main location for painting on Saturday will be Little Moreau State Recreation Area (six miles south of town). From the scenic overlook near the park entrance visitors can pick places to explore and paint — the WPA dam and spillway, wooded areas, trails, picnic and camping areas, and wildlife. Guides will be available for anyone who is interested in seeing Holy Spirit Chapel (“Old Stone Church”) or some of our other off-the-beaten-path sites. And — there are some great views on the routes leading to Timber Lake.
Again, call Kathy Nelson if you want more information Accommodations in or near Timber Lake. These are all places where people can expect great hospitality, each one has its own flavor and style — from roughing it to a bit of luxury on the prairie. Some of the lodges can accommodate groups of artists. Some facilities have food also. Because of a wedding and a family reunion in Timber Lake the same week-end it is best to contact the lodges and make reservations in advance especially if several artists want to make reservations together.
—Handboy Creek Guest Ranch (605-845-3082). Handboy Creek Bed and Breakfast is located on a working cattle ranch near Trail City, midway between Mobridge and Timber Lake. Jay and Brenda Jones are your hosts. Jay is also an artist and will be helping with the event.
